The Ferguson Township Police Department is investigating a Friday night carjacking incident on College Avenue.

A State College man picked up a male hitchhiker at the intersection of West College Avenue and South Atherton Street about 10 p.m. Friday and offered to drive the man to a friend's house in Ferguson Township, police said.

At the passenger's request, the driver stopped his car near Rider Auto Inc., 1703 W. College Ave, police said.

The hitchhiker then indicated that he had a gun in his pocket and ordered the driver out of the vehicle, Ferguson police Sgt. Drew Clemson said, adding that the driver did not actually see a weapon.

The hitchhiker then left the scene, traveling westbound on West College Avenue, Clemson said.

Police said the supsect is a white man in his 20s with light green eyes and curly, dark brown hair. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. The driver told police that the suspect spoke with a New Jersey-type accent and walked with a limp.

Clemson said Ferguson police expect to have more details once the vehicle is spotted. The car is a blue Ford Escort wagon with Pennsylvania plate RKG056, he said.

No one has reported seeing the suspect or the vehicle since the carjacking, Clemson said.

The carjacking is the first of its kind in Ferguson Township, Clemson said.

"I think people here in the Centre Region need to realize that we're not immune to these kind of crimes," he said.

Clemson said he did not expect that Friday's incident would encourage future area carjackings.

The driver was not injured, but police will not release his name for safety reasons.
