Letter to the Editor
Voice for all?
I am writing in response to the discussion of affirmative action. As a minority, I find affirmative action to be patronizing and demeaning. Mr. Chang raised an important question in his letter: "Am I accepted because of my merits or to fill a quota?" Whatever happened to hard work? My father came to this country from India with about $400 in his pocket. In a period of 25 years, he has become very successful and has been able to provide a great life for his wife and two sons. And why? Because of his hard work and sheer determination -- not because he was given something as a result of some program. Mr. Nair, as president of the Asian American Student Coalition, you represent a significant amount of people. However, that is not to say that you represent all Asian-American students. There are some, such as myself, who do not feel the same way you do. To imply that you represent all Asian-American students strikes me as a bit presumptuous. I respect your willingness to stand up for a cause you believe in, but your assumption makes you guilty of the same charge you accused Penn State Young Americans for Freedom -- they do not represent the opinion of many people.
