Susan Miller and Clark Stuart thought they could leave for spring break early, but Mother Nature said, "I don't think so."
Miller (graduate-political science) and Stuart (graduate-art history) hadn't planned an elaborate spring break vacation -- only to relax at Stuart's parents' house in Pittsburgh. But when their flight to Pittsburgh was canceled, the vacation turned into an inconvenience.
After arriving at the University Park Airport, 2535 Fox Hill Road, yesterday, Miller and Stuart found that their flight was canceled and that all flights for today were full. US Air, Northwest Airlines and United Express day flights were canceled.
"By the time we finally get to Pittsburgh, we are going to have to turn around and come home," Miller said.
But students can rest assured knowing that their travel plans won't be delayed further by this weekend's "tranquil weather," said Ken Reeves, senior meteorologist for Accu-Weather, 619 W. College Ave.
"This storm had all the characteristics of a spring storm, and once it leaves, it will allow the snow to melt off," Reeves said.
The airport still plans to have one Northwest flight to Detroit at 7:05, as well as one United Express evening flight.
A representative from Northwest Airlines at the University Park Airport said the airport was still closed, but it reopened about 5 p.m. yesterday.
State College Federal Express pickups and deliveries were canceled yesterday, said Susan Waddle, senior customer service representative.
If the weather improves, Federal Express will resume its regular schedule today but offers "no guarantees," Waddle said. Federal Express' overnight guarantee doesn't apply to weather, which is "considered an act of God," she said.
Because Greyhound Bus Lines, 152 N. Atherton St., closed yesterday, spring break travelers were unable to purchase bus tickets to leave town.
Cheryl Law (junior-human development and family studies) said she had purchased a ticket to Harrisburg earlier this week to leave yesterday for home. But Law's spring break travel plans were delayed.
"The most frustrating thing is that it is completely out of my control," Law said. She plans to leave today with a friend who is traveling in the same direction.
