Letter to the Editor
Explaining letter

I would like to thank the students who responded to my Letter To The Editor concerning a flyer posted by Penn State Young Americans for Freedom that stated "Affirmative Action Is Racist." I am pleased to see students at Penn State are willing to express their views on issues pertinent to the community. I feel it is necessary for me to briefly address a few points brought against me by others.

I responded to the "Affirmative Action Is Racist" flyers posted by PS-YAF because I did not feel the statement was representative of many students on this campus. As president of the Asian American Student Coalition, I do represent a large number of students. I represented many of these students when I wrote my letter to The Daily Collegian that criticized PS-YAF for claiming to represent my communities best interests on the issue of Affirmitave Action.

I wanted the Penn State community to realize that minority students do have a voice on this campus. The AASC serves to invoke self and public awareness on issues affecting our community. For example, 12 men who are involved with AASC are working very hard to gain colony status from a national Asian interest fraternity. We hope to work with the entire Penn State community on programs that will improve the quality of life for each and every student at this University.

Affirmative Action means much more than a minority getting a job over a Caucasian person. Affirmative Action is just a small step in creating a society where individuals will not be discriminated upon based on the color of their skin, sexual orientation or gender.

Reverse discrimination becomes an issue when programs like Affirmative Action are not implemented properly. We must first recognize that racism and discrimination does exist before fighting our socities' minimal efforts to create an environment where every individual will always have an equal opportunity.

I hope that my letters have not been misunderstood. I hope I have contributed to an open dialogue on an issue that is of great concern to my community.

Asian American Student Coalition president
