After waiting more than an hour in the freezing cold outside Tatoo last night, Keith Williams found out that nationally known hip-hop artists De La Soul would not be performing with A Tribe Called Quest.
He couldn't have cared less.
"I've been waiting for years to see A Tribe Called Quest," said Williams (freshman-business administration). "Getting $10 back is a great deal -- and they got an opening band."
The De La Soul performance was canceled due to a band member's injury and ticket holders were refunded $10 as they entered the club, while "at the door" prices went from $25 to $15.
De La Soul was unable to perform because rapper Posdnuos reportedly tore ligaments in his knee during several shows over the last week. He aggravated an old injury during a show last week in Washington, D.C., and was forced to leave a show yesterday in Virginia due to severe pain, said Vinnie Flash, a representative of Dante's Restaurants Inc., the company that owns Tatoo, 420 E. College Ave.
"They said 'We don't want to come with a half-assed show, so how about we reschedule?' " Flash said, adding that he is very interested in trying to reschedule the band.
A rapper for A Tribe Called Quest was one of the people most upset about Posdnuos' injury, explaining that he would prefer to play with De La Soul, rather than be the sole act. "I'm used to them," Phife said.
Phife didn't think Tatoo's offer to completely refund ticket costs to people who only wanted to see De La Soul would be accepted by many people.
"If they know about De La Soul, they know about us," Phife said.
While most people attending last night's performance were not upset about De La Soul's cancelation, some people weren't as forgiving.
"I think it sucks," said Zach Salkin (sophomore-human development and family studies). "I doubt I'll go see a show here again."
As each person entered the bar, they were frisked to prevent alcohol from being taken into the under-21 show.
Due to the frisking, entrance was considerably slowed and local rap act Deep Thought did not take the stage until after 10 p.m.
