Letter to the Editor
Out of context

On Monday, I was walking through the HUB with a friend and noticed two women painting a window. The window read,"He who saves a life has saved the world entire. -- Schindler's List. Penn State Students for Life."

My friend and I went over to the women, and explained that we, as Jews, found the window offensive for several reasons. First, the quote did not originate with Steven Spielberg. It is a line from the Talmud, a Jewish holy book. To imply that it is a Hollywood creation is wrong.

Second, that quote is not about abortion. To pull it out of context and imply that it is, is insensitive to Jewish beliefs. Finally, and most importantly, the Talmudic position on abortion, as expressed in other passages, differs from Penn States Students for Life's. My friend and I expressed our offense that they would distort quotes from a book we consider holy to make their own political point.

We explained that we support the right of Penn State Students for Life to express their opinions on a HUB window, but not to distort and misrepresent the Talmud. The women said they had a group meeting that night, and would bring up our concerns.

On Tuesday, the window was changed slightly to credit the quote "the Talmud, as quoted in Schindler's List." While this is somewhat better, it still implies that a movie is a definitive source of Jewish knowledge. Beyond that, the fact that the window display remains shows Penn State Students for Life's willingness to continue to distort the meaning of a Jewish holy book, and to offend Jews.

I suppose it is ironic that they learned the quote from a movie about a time when there was no respect for Jew's basic humanity. Then they used that quote to show their lack of respect for Jews and Jewish beliefs.
