The Centre County Fire Chief's Association honored two local firefighters on Saturday for outstanding performance.
Dennis Weaver of Pleasant Gap, a 23-year member of the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, received the Firefighter of the Year Service Award. For the past 15 years, Weaver has conducted fire-prevention programs for students in the Pleasant Gap area.
"It's a very well-thought-of program," said Jack Orndorf, a State College Police Department lieutenant and member of the award selection committee.
William DeArmitt of Pennsylvania Furnace, who has served with the Port Matilda Fire Company for five years, was presented with the Firefighter of the Year Award.
Orndorf said DeArmitt received the honor for "the unselfish way he lends his expertise to young firefighters."
Both firefighters received plaques at the annual awards banquet held at the Port Matilda Fire Hall.
Other firefighters nominated for the awards were:
-- Charles Graham of Boalsburg, a 26-year member of the Boalsburg Fire Company.
-- Joseph Wirtz of Port Matilda, a 6-year member of the Port Matilda Fire Company.
Centre County Coroner Kerry Benninghoff and Ferguson Township Police Chief Edward Connor were guest speakers at the ceremony.
