Not so special
From her articles of the last several weeks, Juliet Greer is obviously distressed sophomore football players are living in Nittany Apartments. A closer look at the situation is warranted. Always prominent in Ms. Greer's stories is the quality of living in Nittany Apartments. Obviouly, Nittany Apartments are special living arrangements; they are, as the name suggests, apartments. Hence, they have a kitchen, a private bath, a living room etc., just as any apartment in the world would have. Are these accommodations extraordinary? I doubt it, considering other special housing arrangements on campus. The University Scholars dorm has its own computer lab, dark room and science-fiction library -- all usable by only residents. Other special interest housing includes rooms with links to the University mainframe. So while Nittany Apartments may be special living arrangements, they pale in comparison to some other campus accommodations. The other point Ms. Greer harps on is the fact that these rooms are reserved for the football team, and that sophomore players can get them. This is not unusual. Although campus housing is ostensibly assigned by lottery based on semester standing, this has never applied to reserved housing. For example, a 12th semester senior (I know at least one) could not get a room on a sorority floor if a second semester sorority recruit wants that room. And so football player placement in Nittany Apartments is not out of this world, it is really rather mundane. Please, Ms. Greer, stop bothering us with your crusade and accept the NCAA's ruling.
