Netmen demolish EMU, 7-0

Eastern Michigan's No. 1 men's tennis seed Eric Gessner didn't expect to spend his spring break like this.

Gessner and the Eagles spent the first part of their spring break traveling to Penn State for a match with the Nittany Lions.

But after a lengthy seven-hour drive, the Eagles (0-1) lost all of their matches to a more talented Penn State team. Gessner and his teammates were understandably frustrated.

"When was my appointment for a frontal lobotomy?" he quipped after departing the court.

Penn State's No. 1 seed Ivan Spinner defeated Gessner twice. The first time was in doubles with teammate Greg Gaunt, 8-4. That match was punctuated when Spinner served an ace on match point. The scores in his singles victory were more lopsided, 6-0, 6-1.

The other scores were not much closer as Penn State (1-0) never lost a set. Yesterday's victory gave the players a chance to practice for this weekend's tournament at Illinois, where they will meet the other Big Ten teams for the first time this season.

"I was working on all my shots, trying to tune up for this weekend," Michael Carter said.

Coach Jan Bortner said that the match was an opportunity to raise the strength and conditioning level of the team, coming so soon after last weekend's matches. Although he was pleased with the team's performance, he did see room for improvement.

"We didn't come out with a lot of aggressiveness in our doubles play," Bortner said.
