Letter to the Editor
Happy birthday
Tomorrow is our birthday. Now, before you say "who cares," and go on to read the next letter to the editor, we also want to tell you that tomorrow is your birthday as well. In fact, 150,000 of us have a reason to celebrate. So, for those of you who aren't exactly Encyclopedia Brown and can't figure out what we are talking about, we will happily tell you that tomorrow is Founders' Day, the birthday of Penn State. Did you know that Penn State will be 139 years old? On Feb. 22, 1855, the charter was signed for the Farmer's High School of Pennsylvania, which has evolved into what we know today as the Pennsylvania State University -- 139 candles would cover any cake we have ever seen. And this birthday is enough to make any of us feel younger, even administrators! We all belong to the Penn State family, whether the relationship is as a student, alumnus, faculty or staff member -- or simply a friend of the University. If a member of our family turned 139 years old, there certainly would be a celebration, and so there should be for Penn State. Don't worry, no gifts are required and no embarrassing stories of adolescence will be told. All we ask is for you to show your Penn State pride for everyone to see tomorrow. The Lion Ambassadors, with the support of the Alumni Association and the Office of University Development, will be holding a Jeopardy tournament tomorrow in the HUB ballroom from 5 to 7 p.m. for all of our Penn State history buffs. But if you haven't signed up to participate, you can still experience the Lion Ambassadors' Candlelight tours of Old Main and the Bell Tower, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at Old Main. In any way that you are able, however, we ask you to remember and reflect on the history and traditions of Penn State. We will be wearing our blue and white tomorrow along with other Penn Staters around the world. We hope you will join us!
