Protesters gathered behind State Rep. Lynn Herman's office yesterday to object to his support of the Abortion Control Act, two days after a federal judge lifted a five-year injunction prohibiting the start of the law. But later in the day, a Commonwealth Court judge delayed the law from going into effect. Welfare reform has become an agenda item on almost every state legislator's schedule since Gov. Robert P. Casey's brief reference to a welfare reform plan during his State of the Commonwealth address and welfare cutbacks in his proposed 1994-95 budget. The students who will struggle to keep their feet moving for 48 hours at the 1994 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon are not the only ones working hard to support the families and children who benefit from the Four Diamonds Fund. In the spirit of last year's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, Mike Cane decided to pledge money to support the Four Diamonds Fund. So when a friend came to him and asked him to make a pledge, he was ready to pull the money right out of his pocket. There's good music, bonding and even hallucinations. But it isn't Woodstock -- it's just a part of what will be the dancers' experience at the 1994 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. When State College resident Bill Mobbin was 13 years old, his life revolved around hanging out at a local video arcade and smoking cigarettes in an alley. Now, fifteen years later, cigarette smoking is the only factor in his life that has stayed the same. University students' names and addresses are traded, bought and sold on a daily basis -- by the same businesses who stuff mailboxes with everything from pre-approved credit card applications to mail-order clothing catalogs. Students dressed in their Saturday afternoon sweats shuffled through Pollock's dining hall, picking and choosing from the vast array of dining possibilities. Seated at metallic-looking tables, students gazed out of the huge windows that provide a view of the quad. The dairy cow is hardly thought to be a controversial beast. Usually confined to grazing in rolling green meadows, chewing its cud and allowing its udders to be drained on a daily basis, the common dairy cow has made the jump to national headlines. A new alliance between the University and AT&T may exceed reaching out and touching someone -- it could be big enough to impact everyone involved in University activities. State College Mayor Bill Welch and his daughter were listed in good condition yesterday after undergoing a successful kidney transplant Tuesday morning.
In the past, physical ability was the main factor in determining a collegiate athlete's talent. But a shift to a more scientific approach in the past decade has led to an increased interest in the mental aspect of sports, as the field of sports psychology has become more popular. With nine days left before the Big Ten Championships, all diver Chris Devine can do is count down the days to the conference-title fight. Twice a day, he manages to convert his intense anticipation and nervous energy into workouts at McCoy Natatorium, but that's about it. If the men's volleyball team were to enlist the services of Dionne Warwick and the Psychic Friends Network, it would inform the team, after gazing into the crystal ball, that Penn State's magic number for the next few days is three. What the girl really loved about her sport were the summers. Those carefree days when she could go to the gym and flip around with her friends. But then, the lords of junior high gymnastics wanted more. They wanted her to perform new, dangerous feats. If Coach Joe Paterno arrived at a football game in late-October wearing a black-and-white-striped shirt and a whistle around his neck, many would guess it was Halloween. Few would let him officiate. Two weeks ago, the Minnesota wrestling team did the improbable. In a 10-day span, the Gophers beat perennial powerhouses -- No. 2 Iowa and No. 1 Oklahoma State -- to shock the wrestling community and vault them into No. 1. Tobi Harpur and Barbara Froman will be the most anxious observers when the men's figure skating competition begins today at the 17th Winter Olympics. This is why the swimmers and divers got up before sunrise to attend 6 a.m. practices. This is why the Lady Lions swam 12 meets against quality conference and tough non-conference opponents. Voshon Lenard had time to tie his shoes, or perhaps grab a drink of water, as he stood in the far corner of Williams Arena with the ball in his hands. Eventually, Minnesota's star guard shot the ball. The University may be violating an NCAA policy regarding extra benefits by arranging for sophomore football players to live in Nittany Apartments, which are reserved for juniors, seniors and graduate students.
