Preliminary hearings

Collegian Staff Writer

A State College man was ordered by District Justice Robert Shoff yesterday to stand trial on charges he raped an 18-year-old University student.

Ronald Simmons was charged with rape, indecent assault, indecent exposure, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment.

The woman, who reportedly had a casual friendship with Simmons, testified that she went to his Beaver Terrace Apartment, 456 E. Beaver Ave., with a friend because she heard there was a party there.

When the woman arrived at the apartment, Simmons' friends told her Simmons was in the bedroom. The woman testified Simmons quickly came out of the bedroom. She testified that she followed Simmons back into the bedroom, but said she assumed there were other people in the room since she heard loud music coming from the bedroom.

She also testified that once she was in the room they began dancing and he closed the door. She testified that she repeated over and over that she had to leave. Simmons allegedly laid her on the bed and began kissing her breasts. He then allegedly forced her to touch his penis.

The woman then testified she heard something that sounded like a wrapper being opened. She said she assumed it was a condom wrapper. She said she saw his hands by his genitals and thought he was putting on a condom. While on the bed, Simmons allegedly forced the woman's knees above her head and raped her.

The woman testified that as soon as she could leave she got up, ran to the bathroom and then told her friend she wanted to leave. The woman testified that once inside the building's elevator, she told her friend that Simmons had raped her.

The woman testified that she and her friend returned to her dorm, where they called the police. The State College Police Department and University Police Services questioned the woman and transported her to Centre Community Hospital.

Simmons was released in lieu of $5,000 bail under the condition that he have no contact with the woman or any of her friends.
