State College Mayor Bill Welch and his daughter were listed in good condition yesterday after undergoing a successful kidney transplant Tuesday morning.
The mayor was in the critical care unit yesterday morning at the University's Hershey Medical Center, but was expected to be transferred to a regular room some time later in the day, the nursing supervisor said. Jessica Welch (senior-Spanish), the mayor's daughter and kidney donor, was recovering in a regular hospital room yesterday.
"They're both looking good," a nursing supervisor said.
Two doctors were involved in the surgery of Bill Welch and his 24-year-old daughter. One removed Jessica's kidney and the other transplanted it into the mayor. The nursing supervisor said no complications arose during either of the operations.
At a Friday news conference, the mayor said both operations could take about three to four hours. He said Jessica's operation would be more difficult than his because one of her ribs would have to be removed to obtain her kidney.
Welch's new kidney was not placed in the same place where the organ is naturally found. Instead, the surgeon placed the kidney in the pelvic area. The mayor's old kidneys were not removed and will eventually shrink away.
Welch, 52, suffered kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease, in October 1992. Welch has spent four hours a day, three times a week receiving dialysis treatment at the Centre Community Hospital. The treatment removes toxins from the blood.
The mayor began a search for a kidney last June, and Jessica volunteered to be his donor in December. The mayor and his daughter share a relatively scarce blood type, O-negative.
The mayor is expected to be released from the medical center Feb. 22. Jessica should recover faster and be discharged Feb. 19 or 20.
After the mayor is released, he said he will return to his home and recover for three to five weeks before returning to his mayoral duties.
Former Mayor Arnold Addison is handling the mayor's office and ceremonial responsibilities for two weeks until he leaves for a winter vacation. State College Borough Council President Jean McManis will then take over the job for the remainder of Welch's recovery period.
