USG Senate supports restructuring but rejects new association name

The Undergraduate Student Government Senate passed a motion last night to endorse the restructuring efforts of University student leaders.

"We commit ourselves to full participation . . ." Senate President Mike King said.

USG Senate has the strongest interest among the USG branches in what comes out of the restructuring, King said, adding that the senate has been targeted for the bulk of the reform.

Town Senator Josh Bokee explained to senate members the possible structure of the unofficially named Penn State University Student Association (PSUSA). The new association would consist of four branches -- legislative, executive, judicial, and Academic Assembly. The legislative branch would have a campus and town assembly which would meet together every other week in a senate.

South Halls Senator Jitu Modi said he fully supports the restructuring efforts.

"Put your heart into it, put your guts into it and it will work," Modi said. "It's time for us to focus and to take a stand."

But some senators did not think the restructuring would help USG.

"I don't see it as a solution to anything," Town Senator Lyn Spera said.

Town Senator John Martinez said he supports everyone's efforts, but told the senate not to expect the new organization to solve all their problems. Martinez added that the senate should focus on student apathy. The structure must be used to get things done, he said.

But King said, "Structures don't get things done -- people get things done." He added, "We're not looking at this as a cure-all."

Town Senator Wendy Hurst objected to the new name, saying that more people recognize USG. She added that students will think it is only a name change and not a structure change.

Hurst's comments led the senate to pass a resolution declaring their dislike for the new PSUSA name.

"I really hate this name and I can't believe we came up with it," Modi said.
