Trackwomen take strong 2nd-place finish in Michigan

Collegian Sports Writer

Together again this weekend in its fifth meet, the women's indoor track team placed second to last year's first-place Michigan in East Lansing -- to some a sub-par performance. But not to the Lady Lions.

"In track it's harder, we don't think about it like that," distance runner Jenny Weaver said of the scoring. "Yes, we like to win," but what is more important is that everybody does their best, she added.

The win by the Wolverines, whose reputation precedes them, did not come as a surprise to the Lady Lions.

"We knew that Michigan would be tough going into this meet," Coach Teri Jordan said. "(But) I think we competed well against some tough opponents."

The quad-meet hosted by Michigan State, included the talents of Michigan and Notre Dame, with the final results reading: first-place Michigan with 78 points, number two Penn State tallying 45 points, third-place Michigan State totaling 25 points, and finally at number four Notre Dame, with 15 points.

However, even though the Lady Lions placed second, the team continues to improve with season-topping individual performances occuring with every meet. Improvement conducive to Big Ten competition, which by the way, is down to only two weeks away.

"I think this meet was a good builder for the Big Tens coming up in a few weeks," Jordan said.

Some high points of this weekend's competition came from some of the season-best performances.

Kelli Hunt and Kim Kelly finished second and third, respectively, and Candida McCarthey placed fifth in the 5,000-meter race. In the mile run, Jenny Weaver and Erin St. John took third and fifth and Andrea Walker placed fifth in the 200-meter race. The 1,600-meter relay team of Jill Mallon, Kelly Hickman, Adrienne McCray and Kelly Mychalishyn finished second and Kim Hicks threw the shot put for third place.

"I wasn't too happy," Weaver said of her mile run. "I'm happy with the way I raced, I'm just not happy with my time. I would have liked to qualify -- I just couldn't run any faster."
