Ending censorship

We have just three points about Robert D. Jones attack on Tim Miller and Holly Hughes. The first is that if Mr. Jones has a problem about the performers that come to Penn State as part of the Center for the Performing Arts season, the place to direct complaints is not to The Daily Collegian for their coverage, but to Ken Foster and the staff of the CPA. If anything, the Collegian helps people decide what are to view in the area by their reporting. Jones attacks the very institution which provides him with the information to make his own choice.

The second point is that the criticism levied by Mr. Jones is just the sort of attack that Holly Hughes faced from the National Endowment for the Arts. He doesn't target her performance, only the fact that she is a lesbian. We do not see what her sexual orientation has to do with the quality of art she produces or the importance and scope of her message. Ths simple fact is that she is still performing four years after a Congressional investigation into the legitimacy of her work. This demonstrates not only that she is above such attacks, but also that there is an audience responding to these works, even if Mr. Jones is not a part of the audience.

My last point is directed not toward Mr. Jones, but at the larger trend of artistic censorship. The question at hand is "who determines what gets produced, supported, exhibited or performed?" It seems the attitude that Mr. Jones expressed did not stop either Hughes or Miller from performing. Tim Miller, Holly Hughes, and others have proven the government can't stand in the way of art that finds an audience. It is our hope that nothing can.
