ARHS holds off on blocking funds for competing events

Collegian Staff Writer

Association of Residence Hall Students President Scott Payne called a closed Executive Board Committee meeting last night during a break in the scheduled ARHS meeting.

The meeting was closed to the press and Payne would not initially comment why.

The closed meeting was called after a motion by ARHS Vice President James Stephens that funds for individual dormitory events be suspended if the events are scheduled at the same time as an ARHS council event. The motion was made on behalf of ARHS' Executive Board Committee.

Payne later said he called the closed meeting because the decision to make the motion was reached at an executive board meeting at which he was not present.

"I was not informed about the vote," Payne said.

The motion caught many ARHS members by suprise.

"The concept is a good one, but to drop it on us tonight," said West Halls President Charla Clements, who waited during the closed meeting with other ARHS members who are not on the executive board.

The threat of a suspension of funds was targeted at West Halls Spring Week, which is planned to coincide with ARHS' annual Movin' On concert.

After the closed meeting, Payne officially announced that the motion was dissolved and the issue needed further discussion.

"We do not have the right to (suspend funds)," Payne said.

Payne said he closed the meeting to the press because he felt that the presence of a reporter from The Daily Collegian would keep executive board members from voicing their honest opinions and concerns.

"I don't want people to feel afraid about what they're saying," Payne said.
