The Interfraternity Council's new officers, elected last night, think that looking to the future will help improve fraternity scholastics and increase membership.
IFC President-elect Mike Steinberg said that through his "IFC 2000" plan, he hopes to acheive his goals of increasing membership and improving academics.
"We have to establish something now that we can build up to in five years," said Steinberg, of Beta Sigma Beta fraternity, 255 E. Fairmount Ave.
"If you start with the pledges and put the emphasis on them now, when they're seniors the emphasis will be on academics," Steinberg said, adding that the Academic Consultant Program instills the importance of academics in new members.
Steve Castor was elected administrative vice president by a vote of acclamation. Castor, of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, 508 Locust Lane, said he is stressing the importance of long-term goals. IFC comes up with the same ideas every year and often "roadblocks" prevent these goals from coming to fruition, he added.
"Let's focus a little more on the long term and then say what steps do we need to take in the future to achieve them," he said, adding that when ideas work, IFC should "capitalize on them."
Castor also said he hopes to formulate a "non-traditional" rush. He said last semester some fraternity men helped move new students into the dorms, and introduced them to Greek life without mixers or open houses.
"We just need to concentrate on doing some different things," he said.
Mike Wasco of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, 329 E. Beaver Ave., was elected IFC treasurer. Wasco said he thinks that to improve IFC, the fraternity presidents must trust the executives and feel comfortable enough to approach them.
"I want IFC to be an open forum where eveyone's word is just as good as anyone else's," Wasco said.
Wasco said one of his goals is to give a monthly breakdown to IFC delegates about how their money is being spent.
Wasco also said he wants to improve rush by working with the budget to provide better advertising in newspapers and on the radio.
In other business, the IFC approved the membership of the Kappa Alpha order.
