Blast after blast fired at enemy nets. Pucks flying at goaltenders from every conceivable position on the ice. And when the ice had been cleared for the final time, the results were something to behold.
In two games, Penn State fired 97 shots at opponents, defeating Buffalo 9-1 on Saturday, and demolishing Maryland 12-3 on Friday. The No. 3 Icers (18-7) returned to the Ice Pavilion for the first time since Jan. 22 and continued their winning ways, extending their latest winning streak to six games.
"We scored some nice goals today," Coach Joe Battista said. "Buffalo came out very intense, but we held our ground, moved the puck well, and got the job done."
Penn State got goals from eight different players, including forward Chad Markowitz, whose one goal and two assists sparked the Icers. Markowitz gave Penn State a 1-0 lead at two minutes, forty-two seconds of the first period.
The Icers moved out of the defensive zone quickly, giving them a three-on-one break. Forward Matt Cavrak found Markowitz alone on the left side of the ice and delivered him the puck in perfect position to score, and Markowitz delivered.
"Matt gave me the pass and I didn't have time to look up at the goalie," Markowitz said. "I hadn't scored in a while, so it was definitley good to see one go in."
Goaltender Dennis Magulick turned in his second fine start in a row, turning back 21-of-22 shots en route to his fifth win of the season. Magulick said he was pleased with the team's effort and is looking forward to continued success.
"I've really tried to pick up my game this semester," Magulick said. "I'm trying to take advantage of every opportunity I get and it feels great to contribute and help the team win."
Penn State used a powerful offense to overcome Maryland. Forward Mark Konchar scored three goals, and Kevin Castine added two of his own to lead the way for the Icers.
With the score tied at one and only four minutes remaining in the first period, Penn State scored four goals to take a 5-1 lead into the first intermission. But Maryland refused to die, scoring the first two goals of the second period to close to 5-3. The Icers refused to be stopped though, scoring the final three goals of the second, to put the game away.
"Overall we did what we had to do," Battista said. "But I give Maryland a lot of credit, they gave us a good battle and made us work hard for the win."
