Letter to the Editor
Still art
I am writing in response to a letter printed Feb. 3. Mr. Robert Jones of the Penn State Young Americans for Freedom took it upon himself to decide the moral views of all people in a mere six paragraphs. Mr. Jones made it quite clear that "perverted" acts, such as undressing on stage were clearly not his idea of art. The bulk of Mr. Jones' argument was that The Daily Collegian did not devote any time to important stories about performing artists and speakers coming to this campus -- unless the artists were gay. Tim Miller and Holly Hughes were part of the 1993-1994 season for Penn State's Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Jones, if you do not like the pieces for the plays and artists presented by the center, then do not buy a ticket. Coverage is as equal as possible for all artists coming to this campus, and I am sure that the Collegian has its arts reporters working overtime to cover all the stories. Also, the last time I checked, a naked body was not a perverted thing. Tim Miller shed his clothes during his performance piece, "My Queer Body" in order to show the vulnerability in his statements. The only reason that he removed his clothing was because he wanted to show that he was as naked as his thoughts. If Mr. Miller's art is not to the tastes of Mr. Jones and his Young Americans for Freedom, then they can go to the movies or do their homework that night.
