Letter to the Editor
Not funny
We are writing to express our disgust with Scott Hillmeyer's recent column, "All aspects of his life prove Jordan is second coming of Christ." Hillmeyer trivialized and ridiculed many of the tenets of our Christian faith in a pathetic attempt at humor. He made fun of the Resurrection and the Holy Trinity for starters. Then he viewed Jesus' suffering with the crown of thorns as another gag opportunity. The most telling example of his complete disregard for the feelings of Christians occurred when he compared Holy Communion (the body and blood of Christ) to McDonald's and Gatorade commercials. Mr. Hillmeyer's piece would never run in the "real world" of journalism. Maybe it can run in the "liberal playground" that is Penn State, but a real newspaper that has to be responsive to it's readership would not want to face the loss of subscriptions and advertisers that would result from the publication of this column. We are upset because no respect is shown for our beliefs as Christians. Of course, we realize that we are an easy target compared to many of the other groups on campus. We're not likely to prank call you at 3 a.m., get you expelled for intolerance or steal and burn your paper. Don't get us wrong. We are not self-righteous reactionaries, we just think that we should be afforded the same respect and tolerance that the Collegian bends over backward for with many other groups. It seems to us that the tolerance diversity preached by the Collegian is only lip service to promote its leftist values while trying to ridicule the values of others. Mr. Hillmeyer needs to understand that there is a fine line between satire and outright disrespect for other people's beliefs. Unfortunately, he went well over it. We also don't want to hear that the Collegian is open for all forms of satire. Don't give us any old Lenny Bruce lines about the need for open avenues of humor. Mr. Hillmeyer probably knows of at least a hundred subjects that he wouldn't satirize with a 10-foot pole. Besides that, Lenny Bruce was funny. In response to our lack of respect at Penn State, we have decided that we would now like to be called "Christyans." We realize that we will never get any respect on this campus without our very own wacky spelling. We do want to emphasize, however, that we support the Collegian's right to print whatever they want, but we also have the right to refute any offensive article by legal avenues of protest. Scott Hillmeyer may have been hit on the head by a Bible one too many times, but we've been bludgeoned by political correctness for what seems like forever.
