Letter to the Editor
Fair coverage
I am writing this letter in regard to the piece titled "News" that appeared in Monday's issue of The Daily Collegian. Before I am misunderstood, I do sympathize with all those who were close to the former student who recently passed away, but my remarks are aimed more toward the comment that fraternities only receive bad publicity. Is there anyone else out there who is tired of hearing about how mistreated the fraternities are? They demand more publicity and whine about the lack of attention that they get. The claim that they only receive negative publicity is a farce. We all know that one of the most publicized events in the Spring Semester is the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. The Greek system even prides itself on being the most vocal minority on campus. Yeah, they were extremely vocal while giving out bids in the dorms. After all, I know that I have to be escorted by a brother to go upstairs in a fraternity house, so what makes them think that I want a group of drunken strangers walking around my floor late at night. I don't sympathize with them in their plight for better news coverage. In fact, the only ones that I do sympathize with are those students who are unfortunate enough to room with a pledge. I can remember the calls at 4 a.m., and I was astounded at how little consideration the fraternities showed. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, and I even admire the Greeks for the charity work they do, but let's all remember that they're no better than any other student at this University. I think that their coverage in the yearbook and the local papers is more than adequate.
