Trackwomen roll in Boston

Collegian Sports Writer

Qualifying for nationals was on the minds of Jenny Weaver, Jill Mallon, Kelli Hickman and Erin St. John Saturday during the Terrier Classic meet in Boston. The members of the distance medley relay finsished fourth overall and are well on their way to the honored event.

As of right now the relay team has a place in nationals. However, there are some stipulations

"We qualified provisionally," Jenny Weaver said of the relay team. "We didn't automatically qualify. They only take 10 teams, it's really hard. Not many, if any, make it."

In other words, if another team can beat the time set by the Lady Lions, Penn State will be pushed back.

The Terrier Classic is known as an invitational of gigantic proportions, with teams coming from as far away as California. Over 200 teams arrived in Boston to compete on Saturday -- with the the Lady Lions among the best of them.

Although over 200 teams arrived for the event, that number is deceiving.

"There was a big amount of schools but maybe one person representing a team," Weaver explained.

The size of the event did allow for some tough competition.

"I would say we definitely got some good exposure to some very good performers and definitely saw some of the best competition in the country," Coach Teri Jordan said.

There were several lifetime bests for the team in addition to the distance medley relay.

"There was a lot of individual performances," Jordan said, adding "national qualifying performances and improving for Big Ten was the emphasis that was given to this meet since it was a non-scoring meet."

Kelly Mychalishyn ran 58.96 in the 400 meters and Teresa Hohnka in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:29.09. Each were personal bests.

Seasonal best efforts came from Kim and Kris Kelly and Kelli Hunt racing for the first time this year at 5,000 meters, which had not been offered on the event list in any meet to date. Kim Kelly finished ninth, Hunt placed 11th and Kris Kelly was right behind at 12th.

"It was a good effort and we made some improvements," Jordan said. "(We) look forward to running in the Mobil meet and try to qualify or even bring that provisional qualifications down even lower."

However, Jenny Weaver didn't feel that the meet was one of the Lady Lions' better efforts.

"I wouldn't say on the whole the team was too happy," Weaver said. "It was a good workout, but a lot of people walked out wishing they'd done better."

Note:

-- Erin St. John, Candida McCarthy and possibly Teresa Hohnka will be leaving Friday to try to out for the U.S. team for the World Junior Cross Country Championships, which will take place in Hungary.
