A University fraternity will decide tonight at its chapter meeting how it will memorialize a member killed last week in a helicopter crash.
United States Army 2nd Lt. Heath J. Fisher, 24, died Jan. 25 during a training flight near Evant, Texas, in a military exercise at Fort Hood military base. Apparently the helicopter flew into low clouds and lost radio contact.
The death of Fisher, a 1991 University graduate and member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, 329 E. Beaver Ave., has left his fraternity, friends and family at a loss.
Sigma Tau Gamma President Brad Sileo said when members learned of Fisher's death last week they met to help each other deal with the loss. Most of the fraternity will attend the funeral this Saturday in Robesonia, Pa., Fisher's hometown.
Bill Bernier, fraternity executive vice president, said a scholarship fund may be set up in Fisher's memory. A memorial fund has already been set up in his hometown.
Jon Witmer, a University graduate, called Heath a fun-loving guy who was probably one of the best-loved members of the fraternity.
"Everyone used to bust him about the way he dressed, " Witmer said, adding that Heath was voted the worst dresser in the fraternity every year. Heath would constantly wear corduroy pants, velour and '70s colors.
Fisher's mother, Jean, said her son was an outgoing person and well liked by everyone.
"Heath was one of those kids who, as a child , would light up a room," she said. "He lived life to the fullest. He died doing what he loved."
Fisher is survived by his wife Jennifer, also a University graduate.
