At the third meeting to discuss restructuring student government, student leaders debated yesterday what roles special interest groups would play in a new government. It has been a long time since Rene Portland picked up her first win as a coach. It was at St. Joseph's College in 1976. It is a crucial component of any championship team. To have a goaltender capable of shutting down an opponent at a given point in time is a necessary ingredient for post-season success. And if this weekend was an indication of things to come, the Icer net is in good hands. The men's volleyball team has staked its claim in regions throughout the entire country, defeating teams from coast to coast in its quest for the elusive national championship. After the difficulty the women's swimming and diving team had just getting to its meet in Wisconsin, competing against the Badgers seemed simple. With Bob Hamer leading the way in the 3,000-meter run, the men's track team won three events and finished as runners-up in two at the Patriot Games. Cleaning wasn't one of the prerequistes to qualify for the fencing team, but the team has all the right disinfectants in its corner. If anyone wasn't sure about how good the Lady Lion basketball team was -- if the undefeated record and No. 1 ranking somehow didn't convince the cynics -- then yesterday's game against Wisconsin should have removed all doubts. Events in their beginning years usually lack history and tradition. But the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association's intitial Hall of Fame induction ceremony was not lacking. The accomplishments of the 10 honorees in attendance, however, filled the room with an air of achievement. A coach must deal with certain things when he has a young team -- one of those is learning how to win.
