With Bob Hamer leading the way in the 3,000-meter run, the men's track team won three events and finished as runners-up in two at the Patriot Games.
Additional winners for the men included Mark Wimmer in the 5,000 and Brian Milne in the 35-pound weight throw. Milne also finished second in the shot put while Jake Bartholomy was runner-up in the mile.
"We won three and we had a good shot at two more," Coach Harry Groves said of the team's showing Saturday at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.. "We just missed in the shot put and in the mile run."
Hamer's win was especially impressive, considering he dusted the competition by 20 seconds.
"I took the lead from the beginning and that was it," he said. "Practices have been going great and workouts have been going well."
Groves was also pleased with Hamer's effort, adding that the win "speaks well of Bob. He just took off and ran his own race."
With competition consisting of Big East champion Georgetown and Division III champion St. Augustine's, the Lions proved they are a team to be reckoned with.
"We came out pretty good from the standpoint of facing high-quality competition and being able to stay somewhere up in the top of it most of the time," Groves said.
The Lions' next meet will be the Mobil Invitational, held Feb. 6 at George Mason University.
