Against the rules

I am writing in response to your coverage of the Colloquy-sponsored program by Barry Williams, better knows as Greg Brady from "The Brady Bunch," on Jan. 20.

After the well-received performance by Williams, I looked forward to the program's coverage in the next morning's The Daily Collegian. The readers of your paper were greeted in the morning by a front page picture of Williams dressed in his Johnny Bravo outfit.

The problem with this picture is that photographs of the performance are restricted to the first five minutes of the program, as specified in the house rules. Williams did not change into this outfit until well over an hour into his performance.

The Center for the Performing Arts, which provides the ushers and runs the auditorium at Colloquy's expense, made this policy clear to all members of the press. All other photographers abided by this house rule, yet the Collegian blatantly disregarded this rule that was established to ensure that the performer's presentation may be viewed by the audience uninterrupted.

In addition, throughout the article that spanned two pages, not once were the sponsors of the program mentioned. Colloquy -- the primary sponsor and organizer of the presentation -- is a small group of unpaid students who plan about five to seven shows per year on our own time. We are a relatively invisible organization, who, due to the magnitude of our purpose, have th ability to affect more students with our series of programs than just about any other student organizaiton on campus.

We rely on coverage by the local media to ensure that we will continue to be allocated funds. This is necessary so we may bring a wide range of world class speakers lecturing on a variety of subjects and representing the vast diversity that is representative of the student body, faculty, staff and local community members.

After all the work that Colloquy, and our co-sponsors, the department of integrative arts, put into making the Barry Williams program a raving success, your coverage was nothing more than unprofessional and amateur.
