Lineup changes Icers' looks

For those who attended last weekend's Nittany Lion Invitational Tournament, the brawl between Penn State and Rhode Island was not the only surprise.

Last week, Coach Joe Battista told his team he was going to "shake things up," so he adjusted his lines. Apparently, players on the checking, or "red" line, took Battista's message to heart.

Forwards Kevin Castine, Darren Wegner, Andrew Barnes and defenseman John Lucas all saw time on the line in the two-day tournament.

"These guys stepped up and made their presence felt," Battista said. "(They) are now going to be in consideration for playing time all the time."

Forwards Ed Waryas, Scott Shell, Matt Cavrak and Dave Raymer all responded by playing with more intensity. Battista plans to rotate the players in a platoon system in preparation for nationals.

A family reunion put on ice

Icer junior John Farrall had more at stake in last weekend's tournament than just a win. Not only was this weekend important for his team, it also had special meaning for him and his brother Dave, a forward for Kent State.

Had Kent State defeated Towson State on Friday, the Farrall brothers would have played each other for the first time in their collegiate careers.

"I really wanted to play him, but those are the breaks," the Icer defenseman said after Kent's first loss of the weekend. Despite not playing each other, the brothers enjoyed celebrating John's 50th career assist Friday.

However, as luck would have it, Kent took an early bus back to Ohio after its loss to Rhode Island on Saturday, so the younger Farrall missed seeing his brother's 75th career point.

The tournament's best

At the close of the tournament, a number of Icers were named to the All-Tournament team. Among those were Penn State goaltenders Derek Lecours and Jeff Crispino, as well as fellow Icers Brad Russell and Don Lamison.
