School spirit
To the student football season ticket holders: After another exciting football season, I feel that I need to express my disappointment in the student's lack of interest and make suggestions to the athletic department for changes in the coming year. It was very disappointing to see that for every game this year there were empty seats in the student section. The worst games were the Indiana and Illinois games in which half of the student seats were empty. For the two big home games of the year (USC and Michigan), there were at least 500 empty seats. For the Indiana and Illinois games it was obvious that students were not interested in attending. Both of these games were pivotal for Penn State in determining where they would finish in the Big Ten and which bowl game would invite Penn State. For the football player, it had to be disappointing to look to the students for motivation and see all those empty seats. After talking with other regular season ticket holders, I feel that the athletic department should look into eliminating about a thousand seats in the senior section and selling those seats to the general public. Yes, it is true that there are occasions when the general public does not come to the games but not to the extent that the students did not show for the last two home games. While I agree that students are more enthusiastic than the general public, I feel that the large number of empty seats is more damaging to the team's morale than the loss of a thousand student voices.
