Lady harriers 'competitive' in first match; place 2nd at OSU

The women's indoor track team found tough opponents in Tennessee and Pittsburgh. The Lady Lions placed second overall, five points behind the victorious Volunteers, with the Panthers placing a close third. Host Ohio State and Morgan State tied for fourth.

"We had a fun, competitive first match," Coach Teri Jordan said. "Today every point of every event mattered -- only five points was the difference between first and second, and only three between second and third."

Even though Tennessee emerged a winner, Penn State dominated the middle-distance events. In both the mile and the 3,000 meters, they controlled the meet with runners placing first and second in both events and an impressive first, second and third in the 3,000.

Jordan noticed the obvious authority over the two events and expressed her approval over the entire meet.

"We are looking really strong in the mid-distances," she said. "This was a good taste of competition for the newer athletes and a good showcase of what's to come."

Penn State showed a lot of depth in the field events, placing second, third and fourth in shot put, second in high jump and third in triple jump.

"It was really exciting for me," freshman thrower Alana Heinle said. "It was my first college meet and it was really exciting to come in second."

Freshman Kim Hicks beat the anxiety she experienced in her first meet and managed a second-place finish in shot put.

"Everybody was pretty worried because it was the first meet," Hicks said. "Especially the freshman did really well."

With a second-place result after one competition, the indoor track team appears to be on the right path.

"This was a definite improvement from last week," Jordan said. "And now we need to continue to build on this."
