Give some credit

I have never been so disappointed in a group that has promised so much as I was last Thursday after attending a meeting of the Executive Student Action Council.

By a slim vote, ESAC was not dissolved. This does not say a lot for an organization when nearly 50 percent of the members want to abolish it.

My observation of the meeting was this: There was a lot of talking and a lot of hearing, but very little listening.

There was also a lot of USG bashing. USG was called self-absorbed, disorganized and basically ineffective. Is this the same USG that provides the ongoing services of the Weekend Loop, saves students thousands of dollars at the book co-op and is preparing a course selector guide to aid students in class choices? USG sounds effective to me.

Chris Saunders will be the first to admit that USG is functionally flawed, but let's give Chris credit. As a former SGA president at Fayette Campus, I know the number of difficulties I encountered among administrators, students and within my own organization.

I can only imagine the walls Chris has run into when he is representing more than 30 times the number of students that I did. I could never do as well as Chris or the rest of USG has done. I can probably guarantee that most of the people pointing fingers and complaining couldn't do as well either.

Before some of ESAC's members begin pointing fingers at USG, they need to take a long look at themselves. They need to resolve whatever personal conflicts are standing in their way of getting things done.

They need to quit thinking about their own organizations and UNITE to do what is best for all students at Penn State. People of ESAC, you can change your name as often as you like, but nothing will get accomplished until you change your attitudes.
