Letter to the Editor
Defending King
As friends of Mike King since his freshman days and having seen the entire progression of his Undergraduate Student Government involvement, we were personally offended by what Mike Devine had to say about his character. We wanted to write this letter hoping that Penn State students would be able to see a truer picture of Mike King that is not tainted by blatant political considerations. First, Mr. Devine says that "King . . .really does everything for himself." Again, after knowing him for so long this is a dictionary definition for the word ridiculous. How can on who has spent so much time and effort into so many causes only be in it for himself? We have seen him sacrifice so much to help others. He is out on campus working on issues that help all of us in one way or another. For instance, he helped create the Weekend Loop, improving the safety of students around town. He was a co-chair for the book co-op, saving us thousands of dollars. He created senate sub-committees that have helped many students get involved in issues they believe in and that effect the average student. Also, outside of USG we have seen him devote hundreds of hours to the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon --raising money for children with cancer has nothing to do with a political career or personal amibitions, it has to do with caring. These are a few of the things he has done, if you want to know more go up and talk to him, he'll talk your ear off for hours. Finally, Mr. Devine says ". . .Mike is using his power to climb to the top rung of the USG political ladder." A couple points here that we would like Mr. Devine to clarify. First, how is "climbing to the top rung" such a bad thing for someone who wants positions that would allow him to do more for students? Second, exactly how is one to get to the top of the ladder without climbing it? How is one able to achieve a higher position without first having done lower positions? In conclusion Mr. Devine, your perception of Mike King must not be in accordance with that of your peers, since it was your peers that elected him to his current position of senate president. They must have thought, like we do, that he is doing all of us some good and he should have the opportunities to do more.
