The former head of the Office of Business Services pleaded guilty last month to theft by deception and now awaits sentencing while free on bail. While many parts of Pennsylvania were buried under vast accumulations of ice and snow last week, employees at State College's three student bookstores enjoyed the calm before their own storm. It is that time of year again when Penn State students must empty their wallets in order to buy armloads of new textbooks. After bids, rebids and a lawsuit, the state Department of General Services awarded contracts on Dec. 15 amounting to more than $51 million for construction of the Bryce Jordan Center. While University student organizations are researching the possibility of implementing a student activities fee, most other Big Ten schools already have one in place. An icy wind blows through the quads stirring up powdery snow and settling it back into waist-high drifts. Icicles sparkle in the harsh January sun as they dangle from the rooftops. Piles of dark slush line the streets as cars spin their wheels seeking traction. The individuals who braved the icy roads to sit in Rec Hall Saturday looked as much like a bunch of kids graduating from high school as a group of young adults getting ready to face the rest of their lives. When traveling on snow-covered roads, an open parking spot is a welcome asylum. But finding that parking spot in State College may not be easy. Southern Mexico is still in turmoil after the recent peasant revolt, but the saga may be finished for three University students who were there during the uprising. A man police say stabbed a 45-year-old woman who offered him a ride pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder. The plea means James A. Boyer will spend the rest of his life in prison. After squandering money on bars, fast food, clothes and road trips, students are often left penniless before midterms, begging and pleading with parents for more pocket change.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Wide receiver Craig Faulkner had spent most of his four years at Tennessee trying to shed the label of being a "possesion receiver," one of those guys with good hands but without the breakaway speed. ORLANDO, Fla. -- He trotted off the field --beads of perspiration trickling down his brow. It was evident that the receiver was in a relaxed and upbeat mood. ORLANDO, Fla. -- Put him in street clothes, and Kyle Brady certainly looks ready for the National Football League. The 6-foot-6, 256-pound tight end stands somewhat like Paul Bunyan among an average group of citizens. ORLANDO, Fla. -- It is 7:45 a.m. on a Sunday, and Joe Paterno is wide awake. It is finally his time to relax, to sleep in, and now he cannot do it. There is too much rushing through his mind, he says. LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas bookmakers expected Tennessee to roll over Penn State by at least 11 points in the Citrus Bowl, but that didn't stop one bettor from wagering $220,000 on the Nittany Lions. ORLANDO, Fla. -- He quickly sprang to his feet -- the pigskin secured in his right hand. Then, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound safety dropped the ball and pranced to the sideline with both arms held high in the air. As senior Lee Rubin greeted his teammates, jubilation set in. A Heisman Trophy and a college football national championship --both were in Tennessee quarterback Heath Shuler's grasp, until yesterday. ORLANDO, Fla. -- It was only logical to expect the comparisons. After all, both quarterbacks seemed to personify their team's image. Coach Bob Krimmel was not sure what to expect before Friday's meet at Minnesota -- the women's swimming and diving team had not swam an official meet since Nov. 19. Krimmel was pleasantly surprised as the team swam a great meet despite being defeated by the Golden Gophers, 157-143. ORLANDO, Fla. -- When Kerry Collins heard the call for a counter draw to Tennessee's weak side, he did a double take. The usually conservative Coach Joe Paterno surprisingly opted not to sit on the ball and run out the clock before halftime, nor to play it safe and kick a field goal. ORLANDO, Fla. -- He stood majestically next to his seat, clad in bright orange from head to toe. The orange and white pom poms he used as a wig were unmistakable. ORLANDO, Fla. -- The orange that blanketed the CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl had grown a little pale on this overcast New Year's afternoon. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- He could not let go. He would not let go that easily. He was watching his chance go by. It was expected to be the wrestling match of the year. When No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Oklahoma State met on Friday night, however, it turned out to be a one-sided showing by the Cowboys. It was a lone voice from the crowd -- "C'mon Dave!" The men's gymnastics team returned to State College yesterday after competing in the West Point Open. Gymnast Dave Riordan headed home intending to unpack his bags. Instead, he found that his teammate Joel Neuwirth had his own bags packed. Chalk up one more for the Nittany Lions. Three weeks ago, just before the semester break, the Icers experienced a three-game slump that lowered morale and caused Coach Joe Battista to publicly berate the players' character.
