He never really expected it to happen --but now that it has, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Al Martin isn't complaining.

Rene Portland, like a master chef, has spent the past month toiling over a boiling kettle, hoping to come up with a dish that's better than anything she's brought to the table before.

The doubts have been erased and the questions have been answered.

Despite key injuries, inexperience and three of the top five nationally ranked opponents, the Icers won two of three games in the Chicago Classic Tournament last weekend.

The Michigan State women's basketball program has been in the doldrums lately. Only one winning Big Ten season in the past five. No postseason. Waning motivation.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It was a season with a little bit of everything.

The good: a 1,000-yard rusher, a linebacker with 100 tackles, a CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl berth and no worse than third-place conference standing in the inaugural season.

ARTS

Winter is upon us, bringing with the season the usual assortment of wool caps, gloves and senior film projects.

The premier issue of this square-shaped mag is filled with all kinds of tinted pictures and bizarre artwork. Printed on really neat paper, Bikini is supposedly "about what young guys are into," but unless you dig Camaros, snowboarding and progressive music, you might find yourself feeling very out of style.

In an attempt to lose her "Who's the Boss" tag, Alyssa Milano assumes the ultimate role as queen of the grunge. With mud caked over her naked body, she pouts at the camera and tries to look seductive. It's all packaged between illegible blurbs of an interview in the premier issue of Bikini magazine.
