Watch your parking permits -- there is an unusually large number of thefts of parking permits. Universally, the individual possessing the permit "found it on the ground," although the staff or student owner reported it stolen from the car. I can only assume, based on numerous cases, that the permit is removed by a clumsy person who immediately drops it in the parking lot, only to be found by another unsuspecting individual, who then hangs the permit on the mirror until it can be returned.

If you have a decal rather a hanging permit, be sure to attach it to your window as soon as you get it. Don't put it on with tape or prop it on the window. Above all else, lock your car and keep your windows up.
