A University student lost control of his car and crashed into a house yesterday afternoon on the 1000 block of South Pugh Street, the State College Police Department said.
Christopher F. Quinn of 2000 Highland Drive was traveling southbound on South Pugh Street when he saw a bicyclist run a stop sign at East McCormick Avenue, police said. Quinn swerved to avoid the bicyclist, who was headed directly into his car, police said, adding that the car's rear tires began sliding and he lost control of his car.
The car hit a curb and slid into the front yard at 1005 S. Pugh St., police said. The car completely removed a light pole near the sidewalk and then struck the home of Mildred A. Lucey, 1011 S. Pugh St., police said.
Lucey was home at the time but was not injured. Quinn suffered minor bruises and a passenger, Shelley L. Gehret of 222 E. College Ave., suffered a scratch on her left cheek and swelling on her forehead, police said. Gehret was later taken to Centre Community Hospital and was released, police said. Neither Quinn nor Gehret were wearing seat belts, police said.
Quinn allegedly told police he was driving well over the posted 25 mph speed limit, police said. Gehret, also a University student, allegedly estimated the car was going 50 to 55 mph, police said.
The car was heavily damaged. Four large bushes were seriously damaged at the house and bricks outside the house and a plaster wall inside were cracked, police said.
Quinn will be charged with reckless driving and driving a vehicle at safe speeds, police said.
