Dear recently elected borough officials:
The races are over -- now it's time for action. As concerned citizens and students, we see potential to improve town/gown relations in the new local government. Personally and collectively, you can effect change, if you consider some of our special concerns.
Bill Welch, we want to keep seeing you in Pattee, asking students what they would like their mayor to be. You did it during your campaign, and maintaining that personal touch is a great way to let students know who you are and that you care, as well as for you to find out what we need.
Ruth Lavin, live up to that liaison position between the council and students that you have taken upon yourself. As a long-standing council member, serving as a liaison could provide new ideas and new understanding of both sides of College Avenue.
Jerry Wettstone, keep coming up with creative ways of helping students and the town work together. Your plug for local involvement with the National and Community Service Trust Act shows your interest in town/gown relations as well as students -- use that enthusiasm in all areas of government.
Janet Knauer, as the only council member without any State College government experience, use your new perspective to help everyone learn about borough government while you learn. Your suggestion to build a pedestrian mall as a gathering place for both permanent residents and students could be a step in the right direction.
Students and the council both have a responsibility to get to know each other. But because students are always the "new kids in town," council members have the responsibility to be the welcome wagon. Too few students make an effort to get involved downtown because they will be gone in about four years. In the past, those students who did venture off campus were not necessarily received with open arms.
Meet-the-council nights, personal visits with individuals and groups of students, taking heed of our concerns and seeking input from student leaders are steps you must take to make us feel you are truly concerned about our needs.
This transition gives us all a new chance to work together -- if we all realize the opportunities. Good luck on the council, and we hope to see you in Pattee.
Sincerely,
Concerned Students
