Slant 6's female punk power skids into town

Collegian Arts Writer

For Christina Billotte, the reason all-female bands are the coolest is simple.

"I've only been in a band with a guy once, and all I know is he never came to practice," said the guitarist and vocalist for Washington, D.C.'s Slant 6.

The band will perform at an all-ages show tonight at the Wesley Student Center, 256 E. College Ave. The show is co-sponsored by the Aberdeen Collective and United Campus Ministry.

Slant 6, part of the growing wave of post-punk D.C. bands, has released a 7-inch on Dischord Records, appeared on various compilations and is awaiting an album due out early next year.

"It's basic, garage-y punk, but the female vocals add a more textured effect to the music," said Garrett Rothman (senior-sociology), an Aberdeen Collective member.

Rothman said even though the primary reason he wanted to bring the trio here was because of their music, he likes the idea of bringing bands with women. Although there are quite a few female vocalists and singers, women who play guitar and drums are especially unique.

"It's different than the traditional setup of four men," Rothman said. "It's inspiring for women to see that."

"A band that's all-women around here, that's pretty unusual," said Aberdeen Collective's Matt Kirkpatrick (sophomore-liberal arts).

But the Slant 6's uncommon lineup was basically an accident. Billotte, Myra Power and Marge Marshall didn't set out to make Slant 6 an all-female band -- it just happened.

"If you get along with people, you get along, if you don't get along, you don't," Billotte said. "The reason there's all girls is we just found each other."

Note:

-- Slant 6 plays with Pittsburgh's Hurl and locals Jay Cheddar and the Cheesetones at 8 p.m. today at the Wesley Student Center. Tickets are $3 at the door.
