Break the cycle

Bicyclists must take precautions

Whether it's a $1,400 dream machine or a $100 clunker, your bicycle could be at risk thanks to a rash of recent bicycle thefts on campus.

Last month, University Police Services reported an increase of bicycle thefts, and police suspect there may be a chop shop in the area, which may strip down stolen bicycles to sell parts.

But while police continue to search for answers, bicycle-owning students and residents must take extra precautions to make sure their bicycles are safe:

-- Always lock your bicycle in the safest place -- somewhere well-lit and easily seen by other people. If you can, take your bicycle inside with you. Students who live in dorms are permitted to keep bicycles in their rooms.

-- Ride a cheap bicycle on campus or around town instead of a prized $800 mountain bicycle. The more expensive equipment is, the more likely it is to attract a thief.

-- If you ride an expensive bicycle, insure it.

It's not just up to the police; bicyclists must also take precautions to keep their rides safe.
