Stickwomen shoot for five; face undefeated teams

Collegian Sports Writer

The field hockey team will strive for five this weekend.

The No. 5 Lady Lions (3-0) host No. 14 Connecticut at 1 p.m. tomorrow and No. 19 Lafayette at noon Sunday at Holuba Hall Turf. Both Connecticut (2-0-1) and Lafayette (4-0-1) are undefeated.

"It will definitely be a challenge for both games -- Connecticut is always right up there," senior forward Kirt Benedict said. "We haven't had all of our starters in yet. That's what's tough."

Benedict said the team needs to focus on improving their fundamentals during the second half of the games.

Senior co-captain Chris McGinley will see some familiar faces in Saturday's game -- senior midfielder Heather Graver is one of three Lady Huskies who are from Shawnee High School, McGinley's alma mater. But Connecticut isn't the only challenge for Coach Char Morett's team.

"Lafayette suprised us a few times," senior co-captain Becca Main said. "But we're not going to focus on them this weekend -- we're going to focus on ourselves."

Main is out indefinitely for a pulled hip, groin and ankle injuries sustained in Tuesday's game at Rutgers. Although she doesn't anticipate playing for a while, Main will still provide an incentive for her teammates.

"I turn into someone who is very vocal, so I'm going to be very loud on the sidelines," she said, adding that the team needs to work on blocking up free hits and communicating with each other on the field.

"I'm going to be the indication of when I can play," she added. "We're taking it day by day --I'm shooting for as soon as possible."

And the team is shooting for health -- Main joins McGinley, Benedict and sophomore forward Tara Maguire on the injured list.

"(Injuries) come from playing 100 percent," Main said. "I guess that's the price that we're paying right now."

Notes:

-- The third goal in Wednesday's 5-1 victory over Temple has now been attributed to junior forward Heather Atkinson, with an assist by junior forward Chris Blais. Atkinson now tops the team in points (eight) with two goals and four assists.
