This weekend's rugby matchup features the classic protege-versus-mentor billing. But the reason is not one of revenge. The outcome is unlikely to bear any consequence in the relationship when the two teams meet head-to-head.
When the Ruggers "A" side faces the Happy Valley Barbarians at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the rugby field, they will be playing against a State College collection that includes coaches Terry Ryland, Larry Kuhns and Alun Hardman and alumni such as women's assistants Eric Ebert and Jeff Lutton.
"It's a good time for both of us to vent aggression," said Chris Amoratis, the Ruggers president.
Having squared off before, the Ruggers "A" side played a mix of the Barbarians and several "B" side players, with the Barbarians topping the Ruggers 24-3. But this time, the Barbarians will be in full effect and are coming off an impressive victory over Carleton University of Ottawa last Sunday.
"I was shocked to see the (Barbarians) beat them that bad," said Amoratis, whose "A" side tied Carleton, 10-10 last Saturday. "I knew they would win, but I figured it would be a bit closer."
Having an open date in the schedule since August, the Ruggers were unable to schedule an opponent. Rather than have a void in its schedule, the club invited the Barbarians to fill the date. But the Ruggers aren't taking this game lightly. They don't expect an easy victory or any coaching on the field from the opponents.
"I've seen them play before and know the caliber of players on their team," Amoratis said. "It's going to be a really tough game for us."
In women's action, the Lady Ruggers "A" side is without an opponent, with Rutgers pulling a last-minute cancellation. The "B" side will play Lock Haven, following the men's game.
