D. Lewis Mothersbaugh, assistant vice president for business services, has been placed on administrative leave at the same time that his department is under investigation.
University Police Services is currently looking into the financial transactions of the Office of Business Services, according to University Police Director Tom Harmon.
"There's an investigation underway that involves inquiry into some financial matters," Harmon said.
James Wagner, assistant vice president for business operations, would not comment on the reasons for Mothersbaugh's leave but said an administrative leave relieves an employee of duties.
Wagner said he could not provide more information until a review of the situation is completed.
Mothersbaugh began directing the Penn State Bookstore on Campus in 1992 following the arrest of two former officials for alleged thefts of almost $40,000. Mothersbaugh oversaw the transition of the store's operations under a contract agreement made in May with Barnes & Noble.
Mothersbaugh could not reached for comment after repeated attempts.
Harmon said he was not prepared to comment on individuals involved in the Business Services investigation or on whether criminal activity has occurred. He also said he could not comment on whether Mothersbaugh's leave resulted from the investigation.
Harmon said he expects the investigation to be completed within a week.
Business Services includes The Campus Loop, copy and printing services and salvage and surplus operations.
John Brighton, executive vice president and provost, would not comment on whether Mothersbaugh's leave is related to the investigation because he did not have all the information about the situation and it is too early in the review, he said.
