Phillip M. Douglass could have taken the traditional route through college --graduating in four years with only a bachelor's degree to present to perspective employers.

The Fourth of July brings with it barbecues, sparklers, American flags -- and thousands of injuries each year.

State College has its very own unofficial greeter.

Tom Shade roams around town, usually on West Beaver Avenue, with his dogs, Tessa and Butch, waving to everyone who passes. He wears a safari hat and grins from ear-to-ear as motorists drive by. Many of the regulars return the gesture, while the unsuspecting motorist does a double take.

Members of the District 1199P health care workers union at Centre Community Hospital began their one-day strike at 6:30 this morning protesting the administration's stance on wage packages and attempts to begin employee health insurance co-payments.

The student position on the University Board of Trustees, which was supposed to be filled yesterday, will not be confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate until they reconvene in September.
