At the University Board of Trustees meeting next week John Cahir will be recommended to the position of vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. Despite feeble economic growth some signs indicate the future may not be bleak. Last year, the University spent pennies --about 6.8 cents for $1 -- to raise $63 million in alumni gift support with thousands of letters, phone calls and personal visits. After 21 years of communications work in the military, Mary Wilson sat on her porch in Clarion and told how she was informed last year that her contract with the School of Communications would not be renewed. As the final seconds ticked off and it became clear that Penn State's chance of beating No. 1 Indiana had been thwarted, fans around the country were virtually in tears.
