Linksters hit the road

Collegian Sports Writer

While most of Happy Valley will be trying to study for finals this weekend, the men's golf team will be trying to take another win at the Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament.

The team is currently No. 1 in District II and a win this weekend should help the team maintain that ranking.

"The course should be the same level of difficulty as it was at the Marshall Invitational," said Coach Greg Nye.

The Eastern Maryland course is divided into two distinctive nine-hole links. The front nine has water hazards and the back nine is in the woods. Senior Matt Shiley has played the course three years in a row.

"The course requires mostly putting," said Shiley. "You have to hit it straight, but it's not that hard to get it on the green."

Shiley said putting has been a weakness for him lately, so he is excited about getting a chance to putt more.

In addition to hard putts, the team may also have to deal with the coastal winds off the Maryland shore.

Freshman Mike Banzhoff, who has been studying for finals all week, said he hopes to be able to study more in the hotel this weekend.

"It's going to be difficult for me because I'm a freshman," Banzhoff said. "My first final is Monday morning at eight o'clock."

The Lions hope not to brood over their poor performance last weekend at Ohio State. Nye said the loss should not affect the team too much.

"It should motivate us to play better," Nye said. "We just have to focus to get it done."
