Letter to the Editor
Double standard

I am writing in response to the Reader Forum by Ben Novak titled "From censorship to creativity," published in The Daily Collegian Wednesday.

Mr. Novak recounts how his faith in Penn State and the townspeople has been confirmed by their demonstration not to ". . .put up with the tactics of censorship and intimidation." Very touching. Where however, was this public spirit during the infamous McCarthy era that witnessed the mindless and vicious persecution of those American citizens suspected of having communist sympathies? And where is that spirit demonstrated in The Lionhearted which in its April 29 edition called for admonishment of The Daily Collegian for publishing a thought-provoking parody by Amanda Martin on the patriarchal nature of our society? Do we have double standards here? Tolerance for the views of those on the fascist right but not for women, minorities and those on the left, each of whom represent a voice sensitive to the critical issues of our time?
