Letter to the Editor
Use common sense

In recent years, the University has been cracking down on activities related to the annual "Mifflin Mob." As a result, last year became the year the Mob moved downtown.

The Mob creates the same problems downtown as it does on campus: It is a threat to the safety of both participants and bystanders, it is disruptive to people studying for finals and it is harassment. There is also the potential for property damage and vandalism.

Due to some incidents involving large crowds downtown in the past year, the State College police are prepared to handle any disruptive activities that might occur. In addition, the police will be working with the Office of Conduct Standards. This means that if you get arrested, you might also face disciplinary action from the University.

The best way to avoid problems associated with the Mifflin Mob is to avoid participating at all. The Association of Residence Hall Students is sponsoring several alternative activities, such as swimming at the Nat, ice skating and bowling, all of which are free. Residents are also asked not to encourage any crowds that may gather near houses or apartment complexes.

There are many different -- and safe --ways to have fun and blow off steam at the end of the semester, but participating in the Mob is not one of them. We suggest that you use common sense and good judgment in chosing your activities.
