Moving out of dorms, apartments big chore for out-of-state students

Cramming for finals has started, and it's almost time to pack up and go home. It might be easy for Pennsylvanians, but it can be a problem for those from out of state -- way out of state.

"I want to go home, but I'm not looking forward to the bus ride to Harrisburg with all of my luggage and the plane ride -- it's not fun trying to lug all of my suitcases onto the plane," said Maria Mata (freshman-administration of justice), who lives in Texas.

But other family members are depended upon when it comes to moving time.

"My dad will probably leave early in the morning so he can get up here in the afternoon to pick me up," said Megan Pallischeck (sophomore-marketing), who lives in Michigan. "We have a Ford Explorer, so we can pack it up pretty good and still have room for the ride. Also, I live in the dorms so it's not as bad as transferring furniture and stuff."

A lot of students put their belongings in storage, said Grace Sullivan, of Yeagle's Mini-Storage in Bellefonte.

"We were full last summer and we have quite a list right now," Sullivan said. "We pick up and drop off of at Parking Lot 80, so it seems to be a very popular alternative to dragging all of that stuff home over the summer."

Glen Dewey (senior-electrical engineering) stores his things in a storage space over the summer.

He said he puts his stereo, computer, winter clothes and coats in storage because he does not want to worry about them.

When brothers and sisters share the trip to the University, it seems to make moving easier.

Jennifer Zabaglo and her brother Dennis live in Florida, so they have a long trip ahead of them.

Jennifer Zabaglo said they each pack their bags separately and before the trip and her brother stategically loads the car so everything fits in.

"My brother and I pack up all of our stuff up as tight as can be in my car and we make the 24-hour trip after making one stop in North Carolina at our uncle's house," said Jennifer Zabaglo (freshman-division of undergraduate studies).
