Band finds 'same old same old'
Music Review

Even if you're an Aerosmith fan, don't buy this album.

In the title song, "Get a Grip," Steven Tyler sings, "Same old same old every day if things don't change you're just gonna rot/'Cause if you do what you've always done you'll always get what you always got." Well, if so, then they are just describing themselves and where they are at.

Get A Grip is just the same old rock and roll chord progressions, same old drums, bass and guitar. It is filled with hackneyed clichs and cheap lyrics. Here's something from "Shut Up and Dance:" "Here comes Jill and she needs romance/But you can't do jack so shut up and dance!"

Poetically the album leaves much to be desired. It is filled with predictable rhymes like in "Line Up:" "If we all wanna live/Then we all gotta give/. . . Instead of just standin' around/Yeah, it's time to get down."

The music in the song "Eat the Rich" sounds like bad Def Leppard.

Any beginning musician can pick up the guitar and play along with most of the songs. Also, a lot of the songs drown out Tyler's signature voice, which is a mistake.

The cover is a close-up shot of a cow's udder with a pierced teat. The reason for my disgust should be quite obvious. If it's not, take a look at it yourself.

The beginning "Intro," as it is called, borderlines on politically pretentious while teasing the listener. This rap rhythm is something different, but unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't take on this new personality and doesn't succeed at Aeorsmith's old one. The words move like this: "Wake up kids its half pasy youth/There ain't nothing really changing but the dates/. . .You got the right key but-the-wrong-key-hole/Yo."

To sum it up using their song titles:

Aerosmith has got to "Get a Grip." Their "Line Up" on this album is definitely not "Crazy." They think they're "Livin'on the Edge," when they're really living off all of our money. It's "Amazing" that this album was released. They should stop playing music and just "Shut Up and Dance." It's time for them to just "Walk On Down" off of their pop ladder, the rock 'n' roll "Boogie Man" has finally got 'em. They are over (if they follow this album with others like it.) I can't help but think this is some inside industry joke. "Gotta Love It."
