When Erica White began vomiting blood in September 1991, her boyfriend and her roommate rushed her to Centre Community Hospital. While the eyes of the nation are fixed on the health care debate, some Centre County doctors are working to make medical care affordable. Penn State traditions used to include more than passing the Lion and eating Creamery ice cream. One losing ticket for the 1993 Undergraduate Student Government presidential elections will not fold after defeat. Instead, they will continue working for their goals. The presence of excellent teachers at research universities like Penn State may seem like a paradox, but recent recipients of teaching awards say the two do coincide. Some students have no idea that an election is approaching. Vance Moss, one of a few students who recently became involved in borough politics, said there is a lack of student awareness about the upcoming vote. A University student at Altoona Campus was shot in the neck Friday morning outside a convenience store in Altoona, the Altoona Police Department said.
The 22nd Annual Nittany Lion Relays definitely served its purpose for the men's track team. The Penn State rugby team wanted to make its final game a memorable one for the seniors and outgoing coach Bruce Hale. For Assistant Women's Track Coach Jeri Daniels-Elder, describing the spectacular performances of the javelin throwers on Saturday wasn't easy. In a game where over 10,000 yards are involved, it came down to a matter of inches. For the teams playing at the Lady Lion Invitational, putting was a major factor in victory and defeat. The women's rugby team got exactly what the doctor ordered Saturday -- a win against a tough opponent. For a full year freshman Kerry McCoy seemed to be the forgotten man on the Penn State wrestling team. Seth Miller has won more than 500 trophies during his 19-year career in the martial arts. His greatest asset, however, is his passion for pain. Lacrosse games last 60 minutes, and for good reason. If they weren't, the excitement of Saturday's game between Penn State and Hobart wouldn't have existed. Penn State tennis has arrived in the Big Ten. The team (11-2, 4-2 in the Big Ten) defeated Michigan State on Saturday and Michigan yesterday, both by the score of 4-3. The triumphs increased the Lions' Big Ten winning streak to four. The women's tennis team will come back to Happy Valley seeing a lot of red and a little scarlet as well. Scoring streaks, momentum shifts and emotionless play. These are the words to describe the scoring done in Saturday's lacrosse game between the Lions and Division III power Hobart, which Hobart won, 14-13. Temple won't soon forget the names of Lori Fitzgerald, Ann Kolongowski or Joanne Connelly. Another record fell for the men's gymnastics team this weekend at the NCAA Championships. For the first time in over 15 years, Penn State returns home without an All-American. After losing the first three games of the weekend series at Michigan State, the baseball team rebounded yesterday with a come-from-behind victory to avoid a sweep, 6-4. Steve Shephard is truly the eternal optimist. "He's always positive," senior Rene Lyst said of her women's gymnastics coach. "No matter what happens he turns it around to be positive." The men's volleyball team knew it was not going to lose. Facing a Division II school whose tallest hitter was 6-foot-3, the Lions knew they were going to win. They have beaten teams twice as good as Springfield this season, so they were almost expecting an easy win. And that is exactly what they got. Before hosting Michigan State over the weekend, Lady Lion Softball Coach Sue Rankin said all she wanted from the four-game set was a win. My Opinion: Scott Brown
